The struggle is real : Lost Your WHY?

Finding Your Why
The first question I ask when meeting a new client is:
“What’s your goal, and how can I help you get there?”
You might be surprised that the answer for most people is not - “ummm to loose weight obviously!!” (that is nearly always the first answer as they look at me like I’m an idiot for asking such a silly question…) When we dig a little deeper there seems to be a lot more to it. Here are a few examples after a bit of digging;
I need to strength train to stop my bone density dropping any further as you ‘cannot reverse it, only maintain what you have’
I have a holiday coming up and I don’t want my family to comment on my size like they always do
I have health issues that have been flagged up by my doctor and exercise can help aparantly
I am trying to get pregnant and want to be as healthy as possible as conception seems to be impossible right now
I want to get back to the happiest version of my self which was 15 years ago and need to find consistency, accountability and a really good plan to follow and someone to help keep me on the right track
I’m recovering from cancer and want to be as healthy as possible to prevent it coming back
My favourite of all time was a client who has been happily married for years looking to get her REVENGE BODY just in case! Haha
The point is, we are all completely different and what one person needs is not the same as what the other needs. So don’t compare your self to others or presume you know what their ‘why’ is. I can almost guarantee you it’s not what you think!
Finding my why…
For me, my reason for training over the last 3 years has been less about how I look and more about becoming mentally stronger, learning consistency, and showing up for myself. After a fair few years of burn out, health issues, failed marriage, messy break ups, infertility, moving countries… all hit me like a ton of bricks…. I finally asked my self my own questions. I put my self through my own paperwork for my clients and found it pretty simple and the dots connected for me. I was looking for structure, consistency and literally just to trust my own self to make a promise to my self to show up to train and actually follow through with it. I already had all the keys but my brain couldn’t put it together properly. But it was in fact, all layed out in a piece of paper MY self had designed!
I started back at square one : My first steps was to be honest with what my goals were, the true reasons and how I could achieve that
Next, I started going to sound healing classes, the point for me was to literally get my self into the gym. When you get there you close your eyes and lie down! Haha, so what was my excuse for not going? Trust me, I found many each week! But finally after a month or so I had accumalated a few sessions and started adding in a few fitness classes and found that I could trust my self to make a promise and could trust my self again!
Now, I’m back at CrossFit 2x per week, Weightlifting with my coach 1x per week, gym sessions late in the evening with very basic programming when it’s nice and quiet and Im really enjoying it. I signed up for 21km run in May and followed my own training program, I loved the whole process, and the feeling completing it was actually the best :)
Running has ticked all those boxes for me. I love getting outside, putting my own music on, moving my body and pushing myself a little further. I would highly recommend this, you don’t need to run, you can walk - and then implement small run/walk intervals when you feel ready and confident being outside on your own.
And honestly, it’s pretty cool noticing that something that once felt hard is slowly becoming easier. I hated running so much before, but I needed something to keep me moving, available 24 hours a day and needed a reason to get outside. The consistency is starting to show, and so are the results. 🏃♀️
The struggle is real…
If you’re struggling to get started with your fitness, sometimes even getting yourself into the gym can feel like a huge mental block.
Then a few weeks go by… and you still haven’t been.
So instead of waiting to feel motivated, try making the first step really small:
1. Start with your “why”.
Ask yourself: Why do I actually want to feel fitter, stronger or healthier? Make it personal. Maybe you want more energy, confidence, strength, or simply to feel good in yourself.
2. Make the goal ridiculously achievable.
Don’t tell yourself you need to train 5 days a week. Start with 2. Or even 1. The goal is to build the habit of showing up, I chose sound healing! This is not a form of exercise at all, but exactly what I needed, the smallest step.
3. Take the pressure off the workout.
You don’t have to smash yourself every time. Go for a walk, do 20 minutes in the gym, stretch, lift a few weights. Something is better than nothing.
4. Remove the decisions.
Pick your days and times in advance. Pack your gym bag the night before. Put your runners by the door. Make it easier for your future self to follow through. I can’t tell you the number of times I turned up to the gym with just my slides and no trainers! But at sound healing…. It didn’t matter!
5. Focus on keeping promises to yourself.
Every time you show up when you said you would, you’re building trust with yourself. And that’s where consistency starts. That’s what I needed and that’s why I tracked it, I post it up on Instagram also as a form of a Journal. I had stopped posting on social media for years and its good to be back.
6. Give yourself time.
You might not see a huge physical change straight away, but notice the little wins. You went when you didn’t feel like it. You lifted a little heavier. You walked a little further. Something that felt hard is becoming easier.
You don’t need to completely change your life overnight.
You just need to start showing up for yourself — one small decision at a time. 🤍
